BlackBerry Keyone Black Edition (BB Keyone BE) Leave a comment

When you hear Black Edition, what comes to your mind? What came to mine was, ‘Oh hey, so BlackBerry Keyone has a new edition?’ Well, the answer to that is simple. Yes, it does. Before it was the BlackBerry Keyone which I extensively did a review of sometime back. I think BlackBerry though a Black Keyone would sell even faster compared to the earlier Keyone which is black and grey / silver. Check it out at .

Yes so before we go any further, I would like to note, the difference between BB Keyone and BB Keyone BE is in the color. Black Edition clearly, even from its name is an entirely black smartphone. Every other thing (except for a very few) about these two very impressive smartphones remains the same. Let us take a look at the main features of the BB Keyone BE then later on we shall do a review of it:

Main features

4.5 inches display panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 4

Physical QWERTY keypad (slide phone upwards to access it)

12MP primary camera with flash

8MP selfie camera

Video recording- 2160p@30fps

Android Nougat 7.1

Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset

Octa core 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 CPU

Adreno 506 GPU

64GB internal memory + 4GB RAM

Non removable 3505mAh batter

Front mounted fingerprint scanner

Now to the real review of the BB Keyone BE, let us begin:

Design and build

BB Keyone BE has the same looks as the Keyone. As already mentioned, BB Keyone BE is an all black smartphone. To start with, let us all know this is a slide smartphone. Slide in the sense that to access the physical keyboard, you slide its 4.5 inches screen up. BB Keyone BE has a very good QWERTY keypad. The keys are well placed once you get used to using it. The top bezel has the selfie camera and the call speaker grill. This grill serves as a speaker as well. Usually, front mounted fingerprint scanners are embedded on the home button. But there is no home button on this phone.

It has therefore been placed on the long spacebar key instead which is a smart move in my opinion. On the back is the primary camera, the dual LED flash, blackberry logo and still, that soft leather ¾ bottom is still included and a black metallic ¼ top frame that halfly houses the round primary camera and LED flash. It measures 149 x 72 x 9.4 mm and weighs about 180 grams.

BlackBerry Keyone

Also to mention, for those not interested in using the physical keypad, there is an option for a capacitive touch 4 – row BlackBerry keyboard. This one, the BB Keyone BE is a tank of a phone. A big business class smartphone.

Display and camera

The primary camera of the BB Keyone BE is a 12MP shooter with phase detection autofocus and deal LED (dual tone) flash. Geo tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama modes are present here.  Video recording stands at 2160p@30fps.

The selfie camera of BlackBerry Keyone BE is a very impressive 8MP shooter. BlackBerry is a business class phone so when we talk about selfie camera- video and conference calls will be very much clear here.

I generally love the performance of the cameras of this phone. It may not be a camera phone but, it does perform quite well.

An IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that has support for 16M colors and multi touch. Its screen to body ratio is 56 % and has a resolution of 1080 x 1620 pixels (433 ppi pixel density). For a screen as small as 4.5 inches, 433 ppi is super impressive. Corning gorilla glass 4 protection on deck here.

Performance and memory

Comes running on Android Nougat 7.1, has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, an octa core 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 CPU and an Adreno 506 GPU. Mid-range performance here if you ask me. But thanks to the 4GB of RAM it runs on, platform performance can be overlooked.

There is one version of this phone unlike with the original BB Keyone. It comes with 64 GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 256 GB using an SD card.

Non-removable 3505mAh battery with fast battery charging capability i.e 50% in just 30 minutes of charge.

Communication and network

Network – GSM, HSPA and LTE (Single SIM or Dual SIM)

WLAN (wi-fi, dual band, wi-fi direct, hotspot), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS (with A GPS, GLONASS), FM Radio and 3.1 type C 1.0 reversible connector, USB on the go.

Sound – 3.5mm jack – active noise cancellation with dedicated mic.
