BlackBerry Motion Leave a comment

BlackBerry is back on the move with the BlackBerry Motion. Get it? Ha!  Pun intended there. This is the full, well almost full review of BlackBerry’s new addition to its exclusive line of smartphones, the BlackBerry Motion. First let us look at its key features before we do a full review.

Main features

  • 5.5 inches display panel
  • 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution
  • 12MP primary camera
  • 8MP selfie camera
  • 32GB + 4GB RAM
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Chipset
  • Octa core 2.0 GHz CPU
  • Adreno 506 GPU
  • Android Nougat 7.1
  • Front mounted fingerprint scanner
  • Non removable 4000mAh battery
  • IP67 certified dust and water resistant

Now now, this is a hard one to call. At first I thought this was / is a mid-range smartphone until I saw some high end smartphone like IP67 certified on it. So where and how exactly do we classify this baby? I believe it is one smartphone that is the bridge between a mid-range device and a flagship. Let us do an in depth review of it now.

Design and build of the Blackberry Motion

I will mention first that the BlackBerry Motion weighs about 154 grams and has these dimensions – 155.7 x 75.4 x 8.1 mm. Yes 8.1 mm thickness to house its big battery which we shall talk about later on in this review. Enough about that, let us now describe what meets the eye with this smartphone. On the back, there is that soft leather cover on the ¾ bottom of it, with BlackBerry’s logo. The top ¼ is of metal build and houses the camera and its flash.

On the side we see the volume rocker, power button and BlackBerry’s convenience key all on the same side of this phone. Facing you is the 5.5 inch display panel, a physical home button with BlackBerry logo (first time inclusion) and the back and recent touch sensitive keys to the left and right of the home button. The top bezel has the selfie camera and sensors to the left of the call speaker. I have to say, this is one phone that will standout whenever you pull it out of your pockets, or wherever you keep your smartphone. It has an extremely unique design and a very solid build (typical BlackBerry on the build of their phones). Really, if the looks of a phone are a big deal to you, you won’t mind the BlackBerry Motion one bit. Be sure to check its pictures out online.

Display and camera

As already mentioned, the display panel of this phone is 5.5 inch. It is an IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that supports 16M colors and multi touch as well. Its 71% screen to body ration allows for a big display estate illusion. Illusion is good my friend. Also not to forget on this review is that the resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels (401 ppi pixel density). Great viewing angles here on the display of the BlackBerry Motion, sharp colors and okay sunlight readability.

We get two cameras here. The first is the primary camera which is a 12MP shooter with phase detection autofocus and a dual LED flash (dual tone). The thing about dual LED flashes is, in dimly light conditions, the camera will still perform great as a result of this feature. And even in well light conditions, picture quality will be enhanced. Some of the camera features present here include geo tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. The selfie camera is an 8MP shooter and is quite impressive as well.

Video recording on the BlackBerry Motion stands at 1080p@30fps.

Performance and memory

Let us begin with platform performance. So straight off its package, BlackBerry Motion runs on Android Nougat 7.1. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, an octa core 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 CPU and an Adreno 506 GPU. These are mid-range specs to be sincere. That however should not be misquoted for a bad platform performance smartphone because that isn’t even half of what BlackBerry Motion is. You get top mid-range platform performance here.

There is only one version of this phone when it comes to memory and that is a 32GB + 4GB RAM one. Now, when a smartphone runs on 4GIGs of RAM, its platform performance is immediately vindicated i.e if it was either low end or mid-range. And that is just what BlackBerry did here. They made a mid-range smartphone and powered it with 4GB of RAM. The result, a phone that runs smoothly and is seamless.

Here we get a 4000mAh battery, capacity enough to last a whole day or two of mixed usage.

Communication and network
