So since the return of Nokia to the market, a lot of people have been opting to buy Nokia phones over other brands which do not concern this article. So I will not go to specifics with that. But somehow, a lot of people still thought these new Nokia 2 smartphones are quite pricy. In Nokia’s defense (I speaking for them), their “pricy” smartphones are one, not overpriced for whatsoever reasons and two are worth just what the market buys them for. But regardless of that all, opinions sometimes are facts and Nokia understands this quite well.
It is for these reasons the company saw it wise to avail a new Nokia budget smartphone, the Nokia 2 which is the reason for this review. It is a phone I took upon myself to extensively review and recommend if need be. But first, a list of its main features before we get to the meat of this all:
- 5.0 inches display panel
- 720 x 1280 pixels resolution
- Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection
- Android Nougat 7.1 upgradable to Oreo 8.0
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset
- Octa core 1.3 GHz Cortex A53 CPU
- Adreno 304 GPU
- 8GB ROM + 1 GB RAM
- 8MP primary camera with LED flash
- 5MP secondary / selfie camera
- Bluetooth 4.2
- Non-removable 4100mAh battery
Quite a number of notable smartphone features for a budget smartphone. We shall talk about those later in this review.
Design and build
In my previous Nokia smartphone reviews, I have mentioned that Nokia likes keeping its designs simple, clean and not complicated. The same is the case here. It has these dimensions 143.5 x 71.3 x 9.3 mm. Its build is mostly plastic on the front, an aluminum frame and a polycarbonate back. The primary camera and LED flash are centrally placed at the top with horizontal NOKIA branding at the middle. The bottom right back has a speaker grill (back part still). The front has the selfie camera, speaker grill, sensors and NOKIA branding on the top bezel. This phone does look something like the Google Pixel (check it out online or at www.phoneplacekenya.com ).
Display and camera
Its 5.0 inches display is an LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that supports 16M colors and multi touch. It has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels (294 ppi pixel density) and has a 68% screen to body ratio. You get Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection to ensure screen durability.
Camera performance on the Nokia 2 is above average. Say 6 out of 10 which is somewhat respectable. It comes with an 8MP primary camera and a 5MP selfie shooter. The selfie shooter is a very impressive one at its work. Some of the features availed here include geo tagging and touch focus.
Video recording stands at 720p@30fps.
Performance and memory
Comes running Android Nougat which can be upgraded to Android Oreo 8.0. This is a once in a blue moon thing for smartphone companies to include on a budget smartphone. I’d like to think it a favor. On board is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset, Quad core 1.3 GHz chipset and an Adreno 304 GPU.
8 GB internal memory as Nokia 2 runs on 1GB of RAM. The internal memory can be expanded up to 128GB using and SD card. I am not sure how snappy you like your phone to run, but the Nokia 2 is quite too snappy for a budget phone. You wouldn’t think it has mid-range platform and memory performance when you use it.
Battery for the Nokia 2
This is the most hyped part / feature of this phone. It comes with a 4100mAh sealed battery. Let me break that down a little, with that you get 1340 hours on standby or 19 hours of 3G talk time or 139 hours of music play. This phone sure is a power horse. Typical of Nokia phones, or original Nokia phones to be precise.
Communication and network
- Network – Single SIM or DUAL SIM – 2G, 3G and 4G
- WLAN (wi-fi, hotspot), Bluetooth 4.1, GPS (with A-GPS, GLONASS,BDS), FM Radio with RDS and micro USB 2.0.
