Oppo is a household name in Kenya now. We have seen the likes of the Oppos f1s, f3, f3 Plus etc etc. this review is about the all new 2017 Oppo f5. Yet another addition of a camera phone in the Oppo f line of smartphones. Below is a list of its main features;
- 6.0 inches screen size
- 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution
- 16MP primary camera
- 20MP selfie camera
- 64GB + 6GB RAM or 32GB + 4GB RAM
- Mediatek chipset
- Octa core 2.5 GHz CPU
- Mali GPU
- Android Nougat 7.1
- Non removable 3200mAH battery
- Rear mounted fingerprint scanner
- Dual SIM (nano SIM with dual standby)
It goes without say, this is a premium and high end smartphone. Its key features alone speak a lot about the Oppo F5. Below is a detailed review of it.
Design and build
Now this is one “small company” smartphone with a very interesting design. Interesting mainly for the design it has on the front. We shall talk about that though. This is a full metal build smartphone. Its back panel gives you one very nice cold touch when held on your hand(s). On the back is the primary camera with an LED flash beside it. There is Oppo branding right below the rear mounted fingerprint scanner (which Oppo has done a brilliant job with. It is a very fast scanner with almost no uncalled for scanning errors).
The volume rockers on the Oppo F5 are on different sides with the power button. This is a setup I personally enjoy when taking screenshots, I am sure quite a number of screenshot enthusiast will relate here. Facing you is the 6.0 inch display panel of the Oppo F5. Now Oppo has decided to go the “LG G6, or Samsung Galaxy Note 8” way with the screen on this phone. Be sure to check out LG G6 and Galaxy Note 8 at www.phoneplace.com . It has an almost bezel-less front. Reduced top and bottom bezels on the Oppo F5 is what you get here. The top bezel still houses the very impressive selfie camera which we shall talk about, the call speaker and a sensor I presume is a light sensor, while the bottom bezel remains clean, with nothing on it. I fancy the look of the Oppo F5. It is a good looking smartphone for sure. These are its dimensions – 156.5 x 76 x 7.5 mm and weights about 152 grams.
Display and camera
Oppo F5 has a 6.0 inch display panel with a 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution (402 ppi pixel density). The screen to body ratio is 78.1 %, all thanks to its reduced top and bottom bezels. It does (the display) support multi touch and 16M colors. And also to mention, it is an LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touch screen. I would like to note its wide viewing angles and good outdoor visibility.
Oppo’s main selling point is its camera. I want to believe since Oppo’s slogan is “camera phone,” then its cameras have to be super impressive. And yes! That is what we get with the Oppo F5. A 16MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. The selfie camera on the other side is a 20MP shooter. That’s right, 20MP!! This is one phone you want to capture all great moments with. It will never disappoint when it comes to matters photography. These are among the features of the camera – geo tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama.
Video recording stands at 1080p@30fps.
Performance and memory
It has a Mediatek MT6763T chipset, an Octa core 2.5 GHz CPU and a Mali G71 MP2 GPU. Oppo F5 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat straight off the box.
You get to choose between a 64GB + 6GB RAM version or 32GB + 4GB RAM version. Either version, you still get a great bargain for top specs. 6 and 4 GB RAM aren’t a small deal if you ask me, look around. And still the internal memory can be expanded using an SD card up to 256 GB. There is a dedicated slot for this function.
A sealed in 3200mAh battery is what we get with the Oppo F5.
Communication and network
WLAN (Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS (with A GPS) and USB 2.0- USB on the Go.
Network-2G, 3G and 4G,
This is one smartphone I would fully recommend. Looking to buy a new phone? I see no reason why not to go for the Oppo F5. It comes with the choice of three colors (for the 6GB RAM version only, sadly)- black, gold and red, have your choice.
