Huawei GR5 2017 (HONOR 6x)
The Chinese manufacturing company Huawei added to its line the Huawei GR5 2017, also known as the Honor 6X. Competition in the smartphone market has really become tight and manufactures tend to experiment with their devices lately. Such is seen with the Honor 6X which for example comes with two primary cameras which we shall describe below. Let’s see what Huawei packed in the 6X this time. This is a review of the Huawei HONOR 6X.
Design and Build
Huawei is known for making solid metal phones. And with the 6X we would be surprised if that wasn’t the case. The 6X has a great build quality. With a full metal body that is slightly curved on its sides, the phone feels compact in the hand despite being a relatively large device. It has plastic panels at its top and bottom and a third generation fingerprint scanner at the back that interestingly doesn’t just sit there. It acts as a notification toggle (this can be turned off) and is accurate in unlocking your phone. The 6X sits well in the hand and the cold metal feel you get gives you an impression of an expensive phone.
Looking at it, this phone’s display is sharp and has great viewing angles. It has good color reproduction and its white balance can be adjusted according to the user’s own preference. It has a 5.5 inch LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors with 71.8% screen-to-body ratio and a 1080 x 1920 pixels (403 ppi pixel density) resolution. These specs on paper are as good as you will see them on the phone itself. The display’s glass is a 2.5D Arc Glass panel with scratch resistance for protection.
Now, three cameras instead of one. Interesting. The Honor 6X has 2 two secondary cameras or dual cameras. 12 MP + 2 MP cameras that Huawei claim work together to allow for faster auto focus and good low light performance. To be honest, this really is the case since the photos the 6X takes do look good, even those taken in low light. The selfie or secondary camera is an 8 MP shooter that does a great job too and shoots pics to 1080p resolution. For a moment I almost thought the camera(s) on this phone were its main selling point.
I love that the video recorder has a new feature called the professional video mode which even high end flagship devices do not have. The video camera records u to 1080p@30fps.
Of course other features like geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama, phase detection autofocus and an LED flash are present on the Honor 6X.
Performance and Memory
The Honor 6X has a HiSilicon Kirin 655 chipset which is Huawei’s own, an Octa-core (4×2.1 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and a Mali-T830MP2 GPU. It however runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0 layered on top with Huawei’s User Interface called the EMUI. The Android version can be upgraded to the latest Nougat 7.0 which is a good thing.
The 6X comes in two versions, the 32GB ROM with 3GB RAM and the 64GB ROM with 4GB of RAM. Both memories can be expanded up to 256 GB using an SD card.
Battery life is always a concern to most. The GR5 2017 comes with a 3340 mAh battery. This is power that will see you go a full day without having to reach out for your charger. I appreciate Huawei packing a bigger battery that lasts longer. This battery has an endurance rating of 84 hours. Standby on 3G is up to 650 hours and talk time on 3G up to 23 hours.
Connectivity and Network
The Honor 6X supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, has an FM Radio and comes with a microUSB 2.0.
Network: Honor 6X supports GSM 2G, HSPA 3G and LTE 4G.
It has a bottom firing speaker that gives okay sound output. Uses Vibration; MP3, WAV ringtones for alert types. Has the good old 3.5mm jack with DTS sound and comes with a dedicated noise cancelation mic.
This Huawei GR5 2017 is a good phone. Its design is solid, it is compact, has some good cameras and a good battery life.
It comes in three colors Gray, Gold and Silver.
