For the record, Huawei Honor Play can also perform other smart phone and/or phone operations despite being made mainly for gaming. You can still make those calls and browse the internet for example, just the same way you would on another smart phone. Now that is clear let us get rolling.
Design and build
This phone got me wondering what a gaming smart phone looks like. Does it come with a jockey stick? A playing pad maybe? Is it customized in any manner to accommodate gaming? Not really. The gaming aspect of this phone isn’t in all those but in software performance. It is just a phone looking at it. You would probably buy it amidst other smart phones.
On its back is a dual camera setup (vertically placed) with an LED flash below. The middle top has a rear mounted fingerprint scanner and on the bottom left we see HONOR branding in vertical orientation. It has been kept clean that way. Front part features a slim bottom bezel with Honor branding while the top is notched (like in iPhone X) with a sensor, call speaker and Selfie camera housed in.
The frames here are aluminum of course. All this material sees this phone weigh about 176 grams (good kilo for gaming I’d love to assume). It has these dimensions 157.9 x 74.3 x 7.5 mm. Volume rocker and power button are on the same side of Huawei Honor Play.
Display and camera
How else would you enjoy playing games if not on a large display. All gamers understand this, and so does Huawei. It rocks a 6.3 inches IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that has support for 16M colors and multi touch. With 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~409 ppi density) resolution those pictures will really pop out.
An enjoyable experience you will get with this display for whichever reason you will be using it. Some of these things you will only understand when you experience them real time.
Let me say something, I kind of find a 2MP lens a bit unnecessary on this phone. Its primary shooter is a 16MP lens and a 2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor. Okay, if that is all it does then fine, as long it does not take pictures. It is 2018 for Christ’s sake, 2MP? Moving on the images you get with it (16MP lens) are as respectable, quite sharp with good color detail.
It does have and LED flash for those dim light scenes and shoots 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30fps videos. The Selfie camera is yet another impressive lens at 16MP. This one does 1080p@30fps video recording. I think camera performance on Huawei Honor Play is decent, say 7.8 out of 10.
Performance and memory
It runs Android 8.1 (Oreo) operating system, we hope for timely updates in the likely event they are rolled out. Huawei’s very own Hisilicon Kirin 970 chipset is on board, with Octa-core (4×2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and Mali-G72 MP12 GPU. Above average platform performance I must say, probably good enough to handle most demanding games out there. It handles my favorite game quite okay that’s PES Mobile.
Are there two versions of this phone with respect to memory, yes there are. The first is a 64 GB +4GB and the second also 64GB but with 6 GB RAM. It goes without say extreme gamers should consider the 6GB RAM variant, no? Or so I assume.
Although you will have to sacrifice SIM 2 slot to enjoy microSD, up to 256 GB, it is good to see this option not done away with. It usually is safe to have that room for extra space. I love this phone’s strong performance especially with the memory part. Rarely do you get 6GB RAM at this price point.
It comes with a non-removable Li-Po 3750 mAh battery. This may seem a little less until you send time with this phone. You will realize it is actually the contrary. You get up to a whole day of gaming usage with it and once it is drained you the thought of Fast battery charging 18W will most definitely please you.
