Huawei P Smart Z

This was expected from Huawei’s midrange section, a selfie camera pop up smartphone. I mean, everyone else is doing it so- why not? The intention being to go as bezel-less as possible and this has been met truly. In this review we shall go through the specification of Huawei P Smart Z which I sincerely cannot put my finger on how the name was come up with. Nonetheless, here we go. Get the latest Huawei P50 Pro at our shop.

Heads up- this is a hot midrange smartphone property also considering that it is from and by Huawei. A quick tell is that its selling point is the selfie camera (of course) and that if the P is not for the P series line then it may stand for Photography.

Design and build

Let us talk about the design of Huawei P Smart Z first. How it looks, what it is made from and so on. My guess is the first thing you will notice is the glossy back it has and might just love it best in sapphire blue. The build is polycarbonate that sees this phone weigh about 196 grams, which is quite weighty for a plastic smartphone. On the back you will see its fingerprint scanner in the upper middle. Then on the top right corner there is the dual camera set up with LED flash below it and down below (bottom left) is Huawei branding- this all-in vertical orientation.

Turning to the front we see an almost bezel free smartphone. This is to imply that the bezels are still there especially the chin and the top one is very minimal and hasn’t been done away with completely so that the call speaker can have room for existence.

Power button has been placed below the volume rocker- which means both are on the same hands-side. The corners here are rounder and the edges of the back panel are curved to give a comfortable feel in the hand, neat. And don’t bother looking for the selfie camera, software in the camera app will prompt it to pop up when you want to take a selfie.

Display and camera

Display

In the same way the corners are rounded so are the display’s corners. The display itself is a 6.59 inches LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. Gone are the days when 5.7-inch smartphones were thought of as phablets, 6 inch has become the standard display size. These days we have smartphones and tablets only, no phablets. With an 84.3% screen-to-body ratio you will enjoy the large viewing experience on an already large estate. Also, worth noting is that this phone has 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 391 ppi density. At 391 ppi the display is mostly bright and this will be well appreciated outdoors.

Camera

Honestly you will fancy the motorized selfie pop-up 16 MP camera with f/2.0 the more. First because of how it pops and second is how it takes nice pictures. What I am not sure of is which of the two you will get over first. Be sure to tell us in the review section below. Video recording with it is also available and at 1080p@30fps.

On the back we see its primary camera which is its main 16 MP with f/1.8 lens. And it has a supportive 2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor for image separation. I have mixed reactions on the depth sensor since sometimes it overdoes the work. HDR, panorama modes are on board for them who mind and video recording is 1080p@30fps.

Platform and performance

Platform

An Android 9.0 (Pie) smartphone it is, impressive. It has Huawei’s EMUI 9 which Huawei fans must be pleased with. Nevertheless, what matter is that is has the latest software update as at of the time of this review.

Performance

It is powered by a midrange chipset in the HiSilicon Kirin 710F (12 nm), an Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) and a Mali-G51 MP4. It is at this point that any smartphone is categorized. And with respect to the named above- midrange for Huawei P Smart Z.  its internal storage can be externally expanded using a microSD up to 512 GB and it is microSD, up to 512 GB 64 GB with 4 GB RAM.

Battery

One other thing you must love about P Smart Z is the extended battery life inspired by the Li-Po 4000 mAh battery it has sealed within.

As to why I will not do a Pros and Cons table is Huawei P Smart Z is a solid midrange smartphone. It is available in three color options Emerald, Black and Blue.
