Huawei Y9 Prime 2019
It was barely months after Huawei released Huawei Y9 (2019) that the Y9 Prime 2019 was given to us. Look, this can be a bit confusing considering the naming of the two is almost similar- and so are the looks they have, or share. I had to step by step cross check the features of each model and upon noticing differences in memory and cameras I was convinced that these two are separate phones. Else they both look and feel the same. This article however is not a comparison of the two phones, I will strictly base my arguments and description on the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 which is the subject of my writing. And as I start I will be listing down the features of you should expect here. I will however include the symbol (*) to indicate which features it does not share with the Y9 (2019).

This is a mid-range smartphone I can already tell, and it also is nothing too different from its confusing brother really. I think they fall in the same price bracket considering the above stated reasons. Below are my thoughts about the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019.
Design and build
That flat metallic back of the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 gives it a very good look and feel. It is a tall phone probably because of the display size. I see a camera (dual) in vertical orientation on the top right corner with and LED flash below it, AI CAMERA written in the same orientation as the dual camera and the bottom right corner has HUAWEI branding as you would expect. That fingerprint scanner is well positioned at the upper back and is easy to reach with the unlocking finger, not to mention it is very efficient and gets the unlocking accurate close to all the time- say 9.9 times out of 10.
On the front is that notch at the top that has the usual call speaker, selfie camera and a group of sensors. The chin is a bezel not slimmer than the ones you will find to the right and to the left of the display. Bottom firing speaker here, 3.5mm jack you will find, volume rocker and power button have been kept on the same side as one would expect on a Huawei smartphone.
It is a great looking phone friends, good would be an understatement.
Now let us talk about that 6.5 inches IPS LCD display. It is tall, it is bright, has good color punch, great viewing angles and good outdoor visibility. With its 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2340×1080 pixels resolution you really will have a good experience interacting with it. That notch can be hidden under settings > display menu by the way for them who do not dig it. A good display on a smartphone in this price bracket I would say.
There is nothing on the Y9 Prime 2019 as impressive as its camera performance. You know since the company introduced AI Camera lenses it has had to ensure that the camera performance on AI Camera smartphones is top notch. And that is just what we get here with the 16MP+2MP Main Rear Cameras and the 13MP+2MP front selfie cameras. That primary camera has an LED flash and does have support for HDR and panorama. They are both very impressive lenses I have to report. The 2MP lens is a depth sensor for both the primary and selfie cameras, responsible for focusing entirely on the object as it blurs the back ground. You won’t need an app for this feature no more.
Performance and memory
Having Android 8.1 (Oreo) on a 2019 smartphone is not acceptable. Look I know there will be updated rolled but regardless, it would have been nice to see the latest Android version installed. It is themed with Huawei’s EMUI skin
In it is a Hisilicon Kirin 710 chipset, and Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. A Kirin 710 chipset is a powerful mid-range chipset and surprisingly is power efficient too.
Here we get 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage which is expandable up to 400GB with the use of a micro-SD, there is a dedicated slot for this function I believe. With 4GB of RAM you should expect some seamless and smooth performance here with multitasking being a piece of cake.
Its sealed within non removable 4000mAh battery will last longer than most smartphones in the market today. It is a large capacity on paper and decent real time.
Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is available in color Sapphire Blue or Midnight Black and you can order for it at Phone Place Kenya.
