This will be (is) among Nokia’s most affordable smartphones from (or of) the year 2019. The Nokia’s slogan for the 1 Plus is step up to a smarter phone as you may care to see on its Official Release Video. But if the phone matches the slogan we shall find out in this article as I hope to guide you take a closer look at it. It is not a stand-alone smartphone this, in that there is a preceding model in its line in the Nokia 1 (there is also a Nokia 2). Chances are this is a continuation of its series of Android Go program of Nokia budget smartphones. Below is what to expect on the Nokia 1 Plus.

Design and build

Nokia 1 is a polycarbonate frame phone (material) with a nice touch of edged design on the back. These two features allow for a good grip on a compact smartphone.

On its removable back there is a vertical bar in the middle top that has the primary camera and a flash below it.  Also, in vertical orientation is NOKIA branding slightly below the mid line of the back. Facing you are two bezels that sandwich its 5.45 inches display panel.  Whereas the chin has been left untouched, the top bezel has Nokia branding to the right alongside a call speaker, selfie camera and sensor. The volume rocker and power buttons are on the same side.

Hey, the design of Nokia 1 resembles Microsoft Lumia smartphones of the 2015s. So, if you liked those design (was good) then you should have no problem loving the improved design here. I think Nokia one has been firmly designed to have a solid build.

Display and camera

Display

Turning on the display you will always be greeted by its 5.45 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen which is an FWVGA panel. It has 480 x 960 pixels (~197 ppi density) resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio.  I love that unlike Lumia smartphones it is borrowing inspiration from, Nokia 1 actually has a display far better than what we saw on Lumia phones. (I make references to Lumia smartphones because Nokia had earlier been taken over by Microsoft to become Lumia until March 8 of 2018 when the Nokia made a come back to “Connect People” business).  The display for example has good visibility outdoors as indoors.

Camera

The cameras are only to here, one on the back and another on the front. The Primary camera being an 8 MP lens with Auto Focus and an LED flash. It is on okay camera, just about the same in performance as its 5MP front facing camera.

720p@30fps video recording is on board here although 1080p would have been a good thing to consider. It still holds up just fine.

Performance and memory

This line of affordable smartphones by Nokia of the 1, 1 Plus, 2 and so on will be powered by Android 9.0 Pie (Go edition). You know that means stock android experience and timely updates on security patches and software updates.

It is an MTK device with a Mediatek MT6739WW (28 nm) chipset with a Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a PowerVR GE8100 GPU.

Memory

With 1GB of RAM this phone is still snappy thank to the stock Android experience which allows for the same. It may take more while to open apps than smartphones with higher RAM. But this is very much expected. It still holds up fine I must say.

A microSD, up to 128 GB (uses SIM 2 slot) a can be used to expand its 8GB/16 GB internal storage if need be.

Battery

Rarely will you see a Removable battery on a smartphone these days. That is the case on the Nokia 1 and the battery is a Li-Ion of 2500 mAh capacity. This battery should see you through a day of a day and a half. Depending on your usage of course.

It is a solid budget smartphone with emphases on battery life, compact design and aims to achieve a great user experience. Nokia 1 is a smartphone I would very easily recommend if one is on a budget. Buy yours today at Phone Place Kenya.
