OnePlus 6T 128GB

This article is about the OnePlus 6T, the immediate successor of the OnePlus 6. Well, not really a successor but a major improvement of it. I will discuss some of these improvements in this piece. Now if you do not remember the 6T do check out its official web page at this link. Away from it the OnePlus 6T was released in 2018, November after being anxiously awaited since it was announced in October of the same year. This is one thing I love about this company.

That it takes them just a few weeks to release smartphones they announce. You know, keeping the suspense short, and sweet. As usual leaks of what this phone would look like were to be expected among many other pre-release antics bloggers and vloggers use to create traffic to their portals. But finally, it is here now. What you are about to read is real, no guesswork, no hear say, no rumors, no nothing. This is the real OnePlus 6T. And these are my thoughts about it. First we look at its main features.

Now we see if this smartphone does live to all the hype around it. Below is my in depth analysis of the OnePlus 6T.

Design and build

Now! This is the first OnePlus smartphone I see that has a few new tweaks to the design and display, I’m talking no rear mounted fingerprint scanner, no common notch and an 85.6% screen to body ratio. I could go on.

About the fingerprint scanner

Now yes there is no rear mounted fingerprint scanner on this phone. Not that is a shame right? Hell NO! That is because the OnePlus 6T has an under the display fingerprint scanner. That’s right.  And the first of its kind on any OnePlus smartphone we have seen before. Here is how it works. You turn on the display and there you see a fingerprint scanner animation.

That’s where you rest you finger for a little while and done you are, your smartphone unlocks. Yes it is that simple, except for it is not as fast as the physical scanner we say in previous OnePlus phones.  Protection-wise though it is very secure. Probably this is an approach OnePlus will look to maintain. That selfie camera can also be used to unlock your smartphone via face unlock. It doesn’t work so well though in dark environments.

Speaking of the selfie camera, it is at the middle top of the front part of this phone in a tear drop notch. Nothing to cry about here since you get even larger display estate as a result of this smaller notch. So yes, gone is the big bar of soap notch that washes away part of your display.

The back of the OnePlus 6T has dual camera in vertical orientation and right below them in OnePlus logo. The back is made of corning gorilla glass, and so is the front. There is no 3.5 mm jack here since the under the display scanner and bigger battery took up lots of space, reports OnePlus, hard to understand I know- but hey, it is what it is.

It is very premium in both looks and feel the OnePlus 6T.

Display and camera

Display

What do we have here? It is an Optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. Well, for them who know, when you here the name AMOLED mentioned for a display you glow with joy for very obvious reasons. It is sharp, clear, crisp, has great viewing angles, great outdoor visibility and so on.

The list is very long with an AMOLED panel. 6.41 inches, 100.9 cm2 is the space it sits on and you better trust this is estate enough to enjoy whatever you love doing on your smartphone. I love playing games, and I enjoyed doing so with the display on the 6T. I also have to mention that it is Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protected and has 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~402 ppi density) resolution.

Camera

So the cameras on the OnePlus 6t are the exact same as the ones on the OnePlus 6. Everything for that matter from pixel count to performance. The primary lens is a 16+20MP shooter while the selfie camera which is most used these days is a 16MP wide lens, It is great to see optical image stabilization here as well as 4K video recording (for main lens).

They are very impressive and work perfect even in low light scenes. Thanks to the LED flash on the back of it of course. I love how OnePlus is learning from camera giants like Pixels and Apple. It is a good thing to copy the right thing and with software updates these cameras will even perform better.

Performance and memory

Platform

It runs Android 9.0 (Pie)- Oxygen OS with a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (10 nm) chipset an Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU and an Adreno 630 GPU. That chipset is a beast (in October 2018).

Memory

Well, am I surprised to see no memory expansion options here on the OnePlus 6T? Yes!! This isn’t like OnePlus. But bright side is the least internal memory you get here is 128GB + 6 or 8GB RAM. The other is 256GB + 8GB RAM. Now if you complain about value for money here because there is no SD card slot, I give up.

Battery

It has been boosted to a non-removable Li-Po 3700 mAh battery which last up to 6 hours of in screen time. That is about a whole day of regular usage which is good. What is not good is that there is no wireless charging here notwithstanding the fact that this phone has a glass back. There is Fast battery charging 5V 4A 20W (Dash Charge) though.

Now this is a very solid smartphone that I would recommend any time and to anyone looking to buy a premium flagship smartphone.

Pros Cons
  • Great build
  • Good call quality
  • Impressive cameras
  • Great display
  • Good battery
  • Great platform performance
  • Large internal memory options
  • No wireless charging
  • No 3.5mm jack
