OnePlus 7 (256GB + 12 GB RAM)

Many will overlook the OnePlus 7. Many might not even realize this phone exists. Not because there is any fault with it but because the company thought it wise to focus advertising attention on the OnePlus 7 Plus which comes with a curved display and whatnot. This one, however, just the OnePlus 7 has more to offer if I can tell you. That is when compared to its predecessor the OnePlus 6T of October 2018. Seeing the two side to side you would think you are looking at the same smartphone. But to your surprise, the 7 has more tricks under its sleeves. Design and build

One thing about OnePlus is that the company never disappoints you when it comes to the design and build of its smartphones. I can say that again with confidence. This is because the company understands the extent to which looks alone can attract a great audience. The OnePlus 7 attracts in this way: the front panel is all Corning Gorilla 6 glass. You will notice a call speaker grill at the very top of the V-notch camera. Yes! And that can be translated like this, screen estate us uninterrupted. The bottom bezel has been slimmed. One other thing about the front panel is that it has a fingerprint scanner under it.

There will be an animation to guide you with the same. Then came the glass back panel, this time with corning gorilla glass 5 protection. That is right. OnePlus 7’s glass build just adds to it a premium touch and a clean finish. You will also notice the notification slider on the side just below the power button and a volume rocker on the opposite side of the all-rounded aluminum frame. Before I forget, the camera setup on the back features a dual-camera bump with a flash. And just below this arrangement is the OnePlus logo.

Display and camera

These two go hand in hand folks. The display and the camera. Trust me you do not want to take nice looking pictures that are only nice on other people’s displays and not yours. Luckily, you have been covered here. First the display. This is an Optic AMOLED 6.41 inches display panel. That word AMOLED alone should trigger your appetite. Tell me, when did any AMOLED panel on an OnePlus smartphone fails to deliver? Personally, I cannot recall. Straight away you will also notice the crisp resolution here. It is an impressive 1080 x 2340 pixels (~402 PPI density) with nice-looking friendly to eye presentation. This display will just light up your day.

The camera narrative of the OnePlus 7 is told this way. OnePlus decided to replace the ultra-wide lens with a telephoto lens. Okay! Is this a big deal? Yes, to some and ‘I don’t mind’ to most. Now should you be among the former group then be advised that the OnePlus 7 Pro is the next available option? For a little more legal tender though.

Nonetheless, the cameras here are superb. Think about that 48 MP lens for example with a wide f/1.7 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization huh? In fact. IOS isn’t even included on some very reputable smartphones. Then there is the 5MP depth sensor which the telephoto lens I just mentioned. Do not despise its pixel count. It has an essential role in final image quality.

Performance

When talking about performance then we refer to stuff like the Operating system, storage, memory, battery capacity, and so on. It will please you to know that the OnePlus 7 runs Android 9.0 (Pie) with Oxygen OS 9.5.6. Oxygen OS to me is just another name for stock Android. And you know what that means- timely updates. A Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) chipset and an Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.80 GHz Kryo 485) CPU are responsible for task processing whereas the Adreno 640 GPU gets the graphics just right.

Internal storage and memory on the other hand present you with these options 256 GB with 12 GB RAM or with. Either is a beast. Truly you need not have so much worry about battery life here since the non-removable Li-Po 3700 mAh battery should see you forget about your charger for close to one and a half a day mate. And 20W fast battery charging is what you get when that time comes.

Verdict

Unfortunately, this smartphone is under the radar for all the wrong reasons. And I blame OnePlus for doing that with such a splendid work of art. You will love all aspects of it-camera and platform performance topping the list. It is a smartphone I can very easily recommend you buy from Kenya’s number one smartphone dealer Phone Place Kenya today.
