Oppo A7

These are my thoughts about Oppo A7 which was announced 2018, November and released in 2018, November. Same month announced, same month released- that is Oppo they deliver as faster than you can imagine. Anyway it is here and thankfully Phone Place Kenya got your back covered with a review of the Oppo A7 for you Oppo fans and generally tech enthusiasts.

This article however is not for a specific audience, all are invited to read and learn. Now before I get into the detail about it I would love to say one thing, I love this phone, and I bet most people will share in my taste for how great this smartphone will prove to be, both on paper and real time. And on paper this is what it has to offer.

Key features

  • GSM, HSPA and LTE network technology
IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • 6.2 inches, 95.9 cm2 (~81.6% screen-to-body ratio)
  • 720 x 1520 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~271 ppi density)
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Android 8.1 (Oreo) – Color OS 5.2
  • Qualcomm SDM450 Snapdragon 450 (14 nm) chipset
  • Octa-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU
  • Adreno 506 GPU
  • Micro SD, up to 256 GB (dedicated slot
    32/64 GB, 3/4 GB RAM
  • Primary camera: 13 MP, f/2.2, AF
    2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor
  • LED flash, HDR, panorama
  • 1080p@30fps video
  • Selfie camera 16 MP, f/2.0
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, WiFi Direct, hotspot
  • Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, LE
  • GPS Yes, with A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS
  • FM radio
  • Micro USB 2.0, USB On-The-Go
  • Fingerprint (rear-mounted)
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 4230 mAh battery
  • Available in Glazing Blue, Dazzling Gold, Rose Pink

I will tell you, this is a midrange smartphone- on made to be affordable without having to sacrifice much on important features. I would guess its key selling point is in its design, build and camera performance gathering from the list above.

Connectivity and network

This is a 4G enabled smartphone. Always be keen to know if a phone is. That means it also supports 3G and 2G. There is Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n, WiFi Direct, hotspot), Bluetooth (4.2, A2DP, LE) and GPS (with A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS). My personal favorite an FM radio is also on deck here. Though not a big deal, what I do not love about it is that it comes with a micro USB 2.0. I mean come on Oppo, it is 2018 (bear in mind this article was written in 2018). Overall it does nail it all in this department. The nails however did not pierce enough to reach NFC. Also not a big deal but, it would have been nice.

Design and build

As seen in the picture above this is a very good looking smartphone. An eye catcher and an attention seeker. Tell you what this phone just begs you to pick it up when you look at it. It surely is a beauty and the build it comes with is also quite solid and it gives a good feel in hand.  You should see the detail of the LED flash on the back, how it drops away from the main camera on the top right corner- amazing. Then there is that rear mounted fingerprint scanner right about OPPO branding.

On the front we see a dew drop notch which I personally prefer as compared to the normal one. It gives you more display estate (it is the same just an illusion) especially on its 6.2 inches panel. This notch houses the front facing camera while the bottom bezel has been left clean. Power button and volume rocker are on the sides as one would expect.

Display and camera

Display

Looking at it you will notice that the corners of the display are rounded. As to why they are, I do not know but it sure is an interesting detail that adds to the looks of this phone. As mentioned before it is a 6.2 inches panel that comes protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to ensure its durability. This is a mostly bright display with 720 x 1520 pixels, 19:9 ratio and ~271 ppi density.

Well, I wish I could put this any better but 271 ppi density isn’t good enough. Colors are great okay but depth is a bit shallow with such ppi. But really this is just on paper since you will not notice a thing when you interact with this display. Multi touch and 16 M colors are some of the features of it.

Camera

We get three cameras here. Now Oppo has built reputation around camera performance of its smartphones. And long live Oppo for that. This same reputation has been maintained here with a 16 MP front facing camera and a 13 MP, f/2.2, AF with a 2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor primary camera. Both lenses perform impressively and stop at nothing.

A camera phone it is indeed. The kind of images and pictures you get here will wow you. Whereas photography with it is impressive it suffers a little on the video side since shooting can only be up to 1080p@30fps really is okay for a midrange smartphone I just thought maybe we would get more. That regardless this is a phone I would recommend any day to photography lovers.

Performance and memory

Platform

Maybe Oppo should follow suit and drop Color OS 5.2 entirely replacing it with Android 8.1 (Oreo) which it does run. Some love it, some don’t so really it is not a deal breaker this very minor and ignorable detail. On to some better news it has a Qualcomm SDM450 Snapdragon 450 (14 nm) chipset and an Octa-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU with Adreno 506 GPU. Quite respectable midrange performance stats it has to be said, way above expectations if you ask me.

Memory

32 +3GB or 64 GB +4 GB RAM. That’s two versions of this model and both have support for Micro SD, up to 256 GB with a dedicated slot. There surely is nothing to whine about here this is more than enough.

Battery

That Non-removable Li-Ion 4230 mAh battery it comes with should last up to a whole day of usage, don’t be surprised if it hits two. This is a really large battery capacity.

Pros Cons
  • Great build and good looks
  • Impressive cameras
  • Great battery life
  • Good platform performance
  • Micro USB 2.0
  • No NFC
