Design and build

Oppo Reno (and almost all Oppo smartphones) is an attractive smartphone. This cuts through all its physical features. Its naturally poetic aurora purple of het black color is inspired by fathomless depths. Keeping in mind this is a glass back panel. And glass backs though delicate, are ever sleek. You will notice how the back panel is curved at the edges; this makes Oppo Reno Z sit comfortably in the hand.

Facing you is the display panel with a waterdrop notch that sees the bezels here reduced to achieve a 92% screen to body ratio. That’s right, 92% of Oppo Reno Z’s front is the display.

The volume rocker and power button are on opposite sides of the edges and both have been gradually sunk into the aluminum frame sides. On the back you will also see a dual camera setup with flash and the writing, “designed by Oppo.”

You will also notice how the curved corners of this phone have been replicated on the display. Just above the dewdrop notch is a call receiver which doubles up as a secondary speaker which together ensure a cinematic sound quality.

Underneath the display is the fingerprint scanner and there is fingerprint animation to guide you through it after you have set up this feature. And it works just perfectly.

Display and camera

Display

Now what you also need to know about this display is that it is 6.4 inches HDR10 compliant. The space it occupies is 100.5 cm2 with a 19.5:9 ratio. Its 1080 x 2340 pixels, (~403 ppi density) resolutions sees colors and content well presented. And that is also true for its deep black colors thanks to the AMOLED capacitive touchscreen it is.

Camera

Camera performance of Oppo Reno Z was the main focus, pun intended. Though I do not say that merely for humor. Reno Z is a beautiful image production device with quite a number of features to have fun with.  Some of which include Ultra Night Mode 2.0, Dazzle Color Mode, New Artistic Portrait and so on. You will love night mode’s stunning depth and clarity just as much as you will 4K video recording with Reno Z’s 48MP wide primary camera. It has a separate 5MP depth sensor.

That selfie camera facing you each time you pick up your phone is a 32MP HDR lens. You imagine the crispness of selfies you should expect here. Outstanding, and that they will be.

Performance

Platform

When talking about platform performance we refer to the operating and operation systems. You are looking at an Android powered smartphone here running Android 9.0 (Pie) with ColorOS 6.  It has a Mediatek MT6779 Helio P90 (12 nm) chipset, an Octa-core (2×2.2 GHz Cortex-A75 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) CPU and a PowerVR GM9446 GPU.

Consider some of the optimization like gaming and image processing. This is a great performing smartphone. And for the price, a bargain.

Storage

Unfortunately, there is not provision for memory expansion via external sources like an SD card for example. Nonetheless you still get 128/256 GB with 6 GB RAM or 128 GB with 8 GB RAM. Most who have storage concerns will probably go for the 256GB + 6GB RAM model- which is a great choice. All three models are great in fact.

Battery

Do you ever worry about battery life of a phone? Rhetorical question I know. Here is Reno Z’s reply to that- a non-removable Li-Po 4035 mAh battery with fast battery charging 20W (VOOC 3.0) using the provided charger. Now that is quite a capacity, you’ll love it.

Verdict

If you have been following then, you must realize that Oppo Reno Z is not your ordinary mid-range smartphone dear reader. It was been made to impress. It is available in color Star Purple, Extreme Night Black, Coral Orange or Bead White- rock it how best you love it.
