Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 128GB

So Samsung has joined the league of inventors and introducers (or first timers) of new concepts in smartphones. I am talking about their addition to the mid-range line if Galaxy A smartphones in the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 128GB. Now, Galaxy A7 (2017) was a hell of a smartphone. For me, it was the midrange smartphone of the year.

Interestingly, as Samsung boasts joining the big boys I mentioned at the start of this review they are doing so as they sacrifice previous features that really stood put in the A7 (2017). We shall talk about these later on in this review. Check put the Galaxy A7 (2017) by the way just in case you missed it here. You can also check out the A7 (2018) website here. See the difference.

Design and build

Let me start by saying this, Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 128GB is a stunning smartphone, what a beauty this is. It is truly an exclusive phone look at that actually looks more premium than it costs. I mean if this is the direction Samsung is looking to take with its midrange smartphones then Samsung surely has my undivided attention.

And that of many other people as well. Look here, it has this shinny back (love it in blue most) that light bounces off beautifully.  The corners are slightly curved allowing for it to comfortably sit in you palm. This phone measures 159.8 x 76.8 x 7.5 mm and weighs about 168 grams. The back has three camera (first of its kind- we will get there) on the top right corner with an LED flash right below and Samsung branding at the middle. One thing Samsung has done differently here is move the fingerprint scanner to the side. It is situated right below the volume rocker. I don’t know but I kind of feel this was uncalled for.

Really there is nothing wrong with is just that on a Samsung smartphone we are used to rear mounted scanner or scanner on the home button (physical). Little matter though, some will love this others will not mind. The front has no top notch there a relatively thick bezel that embeds sensors and selfie camera.  The bottom bezel chin is also present.

Display and camera

A Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is what to expect here, of course and it supports 16M colors. It is a phablet device with 6.0 inches and 91.4 cm2 area. A ~74.4% screen-to-body ratio and 1080 x 2220 pixels resolution, 18.5:9 ratio  and ~411 ppi density are other display specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 128GB.

It is a decent display with good viewing angles and color reproduction. It is good to know that it is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass (unspecified version) and that Always on display feature is available here too for quick time and notification checking.

This department is the one that’s got masses talking about this phone. It has not one, not two but three cameras on the back. That’s something you don’t see everyday. Let me break it down. The main lens is 24 MP, f/1.7, the next is a 8 MP, f/2.4 ultra wide lens and that third shooter is a 5 MP, f/2.2 depth sensor.

Now they don’t all shoot at the same time, each has its own description. The depth sensor for example ensures object is focused on by blurring background, and it does this very well. You get wider angles with the 8MP lens than the main shooter. Video recording is 4K.

That selfie camera shoots up to 1080p@30fps and is a 24 MP, f/2.0 lens. I said a score of 7/10 for camera performance on the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018).

Performance and memory

It runs Android 8.0 (Oreo) and is powered by Samsung’s very own Exynos 7885 Octa (14 nm) chipset with an Octa-core (2×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 6×1.6 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and a Mali-G71 GPU. These are mid-range specifications here. Nothing to cry about, not much credit due either.

There is a dedicated slot for memory expansion here and you choose between a 128 GB + 4/6 GB RAM or 64 GB with 4 GB RAM version. I think it has nailed it here.

That non-removable Li-Ion 3300 mAh battery should last you up to a whole day of mixed usage. We don’t see any quick charge mentioned so we assume charging is normal here, unless otherwise.

Pros Cons  (compared with A7 2017)

  • Superb cameras
  • Seamless performance
  • Good display (large display estate)
