Samsung Galaxy Fold 512GB + 12GB RAM
Samsung Galaxy Fold price in Kenya is about 225,000/=. Now 2019 was speculated to be the year of foldable smartphones with announcements by brands such as Huawei and Samsung with Mate X and Galaxy Fold respectively. You will find full review of Huawei Mate X on this website, this article is exclusive for the subject phone. First up is this a phone or a tablet, or both? Such are the questions we will be answering in this review. Be excited because there is quite a lot going on here. Now we present the new Samsung Galaxy Fold.
A quick history class just to catch us all up. This phone (fold) was released in September 2019 okay but, it had already been released earlier. Only that the first release was not for the end market but for reviewers. A move by Samsung to test the product before it was sent to the final client. This move saw reviewers test the phone and soon some flaws were realized. Flaws which this article will not venture to discuss because this is the renewed Samsung Galaxy Fold. The old is gone, and now the new flawless Samsung Galaxy Fold is here with us.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Design and Technology
Let me put this out there in leighman’s terms. Samsung Galaxy Fold, as its name suggests is a foldable smartphone. Let me explain. Here is a phone that unfolds to a tablet and folds to a regular smartphone. I will further explain. This phone has a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, as Samsung calls it which is able to fold and unfold. That is right. At 7.3 inches it is a tablet, and when the phone is folded, you are left with a 4.6 inches display panel on the outside – this is the display which lets you use Galaxy Fold as a regular phone.
How is this display foldable? Well, it is built with bonded, tissue-thin layers of innovative materials that have the flexibility to fold and unfold with a delicate touch for the unique experience of both smartphone and tablet. Some of the words I have used here are directly borrowed from Samsung. You get the idea I hope.
The dimension of Samsung Galaxy Fold when folded is 62.8 x 160.9 x 17.1 mm (Hinge)–15.7 mm (Sagging) and while unfolded, that is when in tablet mode is 117.9 x 160.9 x 7.6 mm (Frame)–6.9 mm (Screen). It is surprising how this phone only weighs 276 g. Again Samsung Galaxy Fold when folded has a thickness of 17.1 mm on the hinge side and 15.7 mm on the sagging side. The sagging side is the side which on you flap this phone to tablet mode. I think a display panel that can fold is quite groundbreaking. I mean, who in the world could have imagined such a thing?
Samsung Galaxy Fold Display and Cameras
Let me first tell you of the cameras this phone has since I have already briefly talked about its display. We count. Not one, not two, not three, not four, and even not five but six cameras do Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with. I wish I could exhaust each one of them. Ah how I wish I could. I will however mention where each lens is located and what its use is. This approach will only work when we discuss the cameras in the two folded and unfolded states of Samsung Galaxy Fold.
When folded. The cover has a single 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm (wide), 1/3″, 1.22µm selfie camera. Yeah it is a selfie cameras for reasons obvious; it is facing you. And on the back cover you will find three cameras lenses. These are a 12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 27mm wide lens, 1/2.55″, 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, a 12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm telephoto lens, 1/3.6″, 1.0µm, AF, OIS, 2x optical zoom and a 16 MP, f/2.2, 12mm ultra wide camera 1/3.1″, 1.0µm. I have listed the features and powers of every lens respectively. But I think it is important I lay emphasis on the fact that both OIS and 2x optical zoom are features present here. Also, video recording is 4K 2160p@60fps, with the main camera as well as the selfie camera.
When unfolded. I have listed four camera lenses already yes? I said Samsung Galaxy Fold has six lenses. The other two you will find when it is in tablet mode. I think of them as selfie cameras since they face you and you them when Galaxy Fold is in this tablet state. Yea. So then I can rightfully sy that Samsung Galaxy Fold has three selfie cameras. Whoa! And these are a whooping 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm (wide), 1/3″, 1.22µm and an impressive 8 MP, f/1.9, 24mm (wide), 1.22µm, depth sensor.
Of its display I will only list the feature.
- 7.3″ QXGA + Dynamic AMOLED Display (4.2:3)
- Infinity Flex Display (2152×1536)
- 4.6″ HD+ Super AMOLED Display (21:9)
Samsung Galaxy Fold Performance
Is Samsung Galaxy Fold just a foldable smartphone and nothing more than that? Is this just a gimmick feature to lure you to buying what is after all a regular phone? You ask. Well, nothing of that sort. Consider first the internal storage and memory this phone comes with. 512GB with 12GB RAM. 12GB with 12GB RAM. 12GB with 12GB RAM. That is no repetition I only want that to sink in. 12GB with 12GB RAM. And I think I will rest my comment at that. 12GB with 12GB RAM.
It is a Android powered smartphone running Android 9.0 (Pie) – shame. We really hope to see an update to Android 10, and fast. Anyway the update will be rolled only later as is Samsung’s norm. This is a phone powered by a Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) chipset, Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.78 GHz Kryo 485) CPU and an Adreno 640. What more could yo ask for? Maybe that it would have been released in 2020 so it would come ricking Snapdragon 865. Hopefully, Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 ( if at all) will have SD 865.
