Samsung Galaxy J2 Core

It has been a minute since I reviewed a real budget smartphone by Samsung. Many are times I do reviews for Notes, flagships and midrange devices, but this section of budget smartphones I have not been keen to discuss. So here, and now- I present Samsung’s Galaxy J2 Core- a true budget smartphone. Below is a list of the main and key features of this smartphone- probably everything you need to know about it in entirety. Then later on we shall discuss these features in descriptive paragraphs following the criteria used to review other smartphones on Phone Place Kenya. Let us dig in.

I feel like I already love the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Core. It does have some strong Core features I tell you. Some of which you will rarely find on a budget smartphone. But let us not get ahead of ourselves here- first we do a review then decide.

Network and connectivity

Did I expect this phone to be a 4G enable? To tell the truth, I did not. Until it did. And for this I really do thumbs up Samsung. Also the fact that basic connectivity features like Wi-Fi, FM Radio (which some flagships lack) and Bluetooth are present here. It is always good to see such included in any smartphone in these modern days. Then it has a Micro USB 2.0, USB On-The-Go port here. This we all should expect. No one is going to include type C on a budget smartphone. At least not Samsung.

Design and build

This is a plastic smartphone of course. With removable back panel that allows you access to that removable battery. The front is also plastic with a top bezel and bottom chin. No notches here. That bottom chin has Samsung branding while the top bezel houses the call speaker, a speaker and selfie camera. Volume rocker and power button have been placed on opposite sides.

I would have wished for a physical home button on the bottom bezel. On the back we see the primary camera with an LED flash below it housed together in vertical orientation and centrally placed. And to its right is yet another speaker. You will also notice Samsung branding below the primary camera.

It reminds me of initial Samsung smartphones like the J7. I mean looking at it I would just know it is a Samsung smartphone. With a throwback design and build this phone is neat and flashily simple- I love it.

Display and camera

Display

When we talk about the display of the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core here is what we should expect. A 5.0 inches Capacitive touchscreen with support for 16M colors, 68.9 cm2 (~66.7% screen-to-body ratio), 540 x 960 pixels resolution, 16:9 ratio (~220 ppi density) and a Corning Gorilla Glass (unspecified version) protected panel. I really wouldn’t ask for more here. These display specifications meet and surpass expectations.

Camera

We get relatively okay camera performance here with a Primary camera 8 MP, AF, f/2.2 and a Front facing camera 5 MP, f/2.2. There is an LED flash to support the main camera that also comes with HDR and panorama features and has 1080p@30fps video recording. Okay photography here and at 1080p@30fps you get good video recording.

Performance and memory

Platform

It rocks Samsung’s very own Exynos 7570 Quad (14 nm) chipset, a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-T720 GPU.

Memory

8 GB with 1 GB RAM and the good news is that the internal memory can be expanded using a Micro SD card, up to 256 GB.

Battery

Now here is something you don’t see every day, a removable Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery. That is what it comes with. Capacity enough to last up to two days of mixed usage.

Pros Cons
  • Great battery
  • Good performance
  • Solid smartphone
  • Very affordable
  • 8GB internal memory is relatively low

Quite strong features for a budget phone don’t you think? Now I already I love this phone. I’d recommend it to persons shopping for a phone in the pocket friendly space. This is one hell of a budget smartphone. Buy yours today at Phone Place Kenya.
