Design and build

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 isn’t one of those phones that you will look at and know straight away it is a Samsung smartphone. Typical Samsung looks if I must say. Not that it is boring or anything, just that it is so Samsung you cannot miss-tell. It does look and/borrow a lot from looks of the previous Note device the Note 8. Now this has been a major cry from Samsung lovers and followers, me included. We would have wished for something distinct far from what we have seen in previous years. But that really shouldn’t stop you from considering this smartphone.

The build of this phone is Front/back glass (Gorilla Glass 5) with an aluminum frame.it has these dimensions 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8 mm and weighs about 201 grams. This build allows for the Note 9 to have IP68 dust/water proof (up to 1.5m for 30 mins).

The stylus pen

There is something different here. The stylus has a new feature now. I think Samsung saw other smartphone companies are embracing this feature so why not do it differently? I’m talking about a Bluetooth stylus that some reviewers describe as a remote. Yes, with it pushed out of the  samsung Galaxy Note 9 you can perform quite a number of operations without any display contact. You can for example click the stylus button (depending on how you have customized it) to take selfies from a distance. Thanks to Bluetooth tech. It rocks Bluetooth 5.0 by the way. This is new, different and I think I like it, and most if not all persons should. Good job Samsung for this re-invention of the stylus.

Display and camera

Display

Come on, the display on Samsung phones are ever great. And with samsung  Galaxy Note 9 it can only get better. It rocks a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors on a 6.4 inches, 103.2 cm2 (~83.4% screen-to-body ratio) display. That is one heck of a display estate. Imagine doing your favorite whatever on a 6.4 inches display screen size. Be it watching a movie, streaming videos, surfing the net you name it all. This same display has a 1440 x 2960 pixels, 18.5:9 ratio (~516 ppi density) resolution. Sharp, crisp and beautiful to look at. I am tempted to say I am yet to see a display as great as this. But cool, I can fight the temptation. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protects and ensures durability of this display while the Always-on display feature can never miss to feature here.

Camera

I’ll be brief here so I get enough time to talk about the features more. The primary camera is a dual 12 + 12MP shooter while selfie camera has been maintained at 8MP. Video recording with the primary camera is 4K no question about that. If that wasn’t the case I doubt anyone would even consider buying this phone. There is Optical Image stabilization here, HDR, panorama and artificial intelligence to detect/tell what’s on focus when using the primary camera. For example, you focus on a bottle of wine on a supermarket shelf and it will tell you what that is and even suggest stores where it is available with prices. It is a feature you can really enjoy using. All three cameras are magnificent. They shoot like it’s all they are meant to do, and well that’s just coz it is. With its extra ordinary display you will view images and watch videos shot by your cameras with enjoyment.

Performance and memory

Platform

There are two versions of Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with respect to platform performance. The first has:

Exynos 9810 Octa chipset, Octa-core (4×2.7 GHz Mongoose M3 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A55) CPU and a Mali-G72 MP18 GPU. The other: Snapdragon 845 chipset, Adreno 630 GPU and Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU. These are top of the table specifications (in 2018), almost a bench mark for most smartphones out and coming soon.

Memory

512 GB, 8 GB RAM or 128 GB, 6 GB RAM internal memory with microSD support up to 512 GB (uses SIM 2 slot) – dual SIM model only. Isn’t it great that even with all that internal memory you can still expand it even further? With this you can have up to 1TB of storage in your pocket, or in wherever you put your phone, people are different.

Battery

This is one area of the Note 9 I love. It packs a Non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery that supports Fast battery charging (Quick Charge 2.0) and depending on the market, Qi/PMA wireless charging. With 4000mAh you get up to a whole day of usage until next quick or wireless charging.
