Xiaomi Mi A2

Once in a while Xiaomi will hit the headlines and stay on top of charts for weeks with their new releases. Once again, they have done it. The headline makers have made yet another headline, the Xiaomi Mi A2. I am very excited to do a review of the Mi A2 not just because of the hype that went around it, but also because it truly is a smartphone worth a proper review. This is a smartphone worth your money (which you will pay an unbelievably affordable amount for) and also worth my recommendation. Now this is something I do not do every day, recommending a smartphone at the beginning of a review article. That should say a lot about it. Below are my thoughts, comments and feelings about the Xiaomi Mi A2. First we shall take a look at its features in a nutshell.

Design and build

Let me start by saying this, in these days where all smartphone companies what to include or modify the notch on the screen, it is actually refreshing to see a smartphone that keeps it day one. Not every phone needs a notch to be sincere and that has been reflected here. Speaking of day one, the build here is that aluminum body that we say on the likes of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, cold in the hand with good grip and a compact feel in the hand. I love that. The rear has a camera bump on the top right corner and the front has the top and bottom bezels equal in size. That top bezel houses all the usual- that is selfie camera, sensors, call speaker and LED flash which is an added advantage to them who take selfies. Xiaomi saw this one weigh about 166 grams and made it as slim as they could at 7.3mm.

Look it is a good looking smartphone, the kinds you would fall in love with at first sight.

Display

Facing you is its 5.99 inches display panel which is an LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. It comes with 16M colors and multi-touch support. And if you are wondering, it covers a 92.6 cm2 surface area with a ~77.4% screen-to-body ratio, , 18:9 aspect ratio and can proudly beat its chest to for a 1080 x 2160 pixels (~403 ppi density) resolution. Before we go any further I would love to remind us that we are talking about a budget mid-range smartphone. Don’t get confused *wink*. Decent display it is with great color presentation, improved outdoor visibility and a good estate to interact with.

Camera

Refer Xiaomi Pocofone f1.

The Pocofone came before this one and was a buzz. Check it out, I mention it here because it has impressive cameras and since it and the Mi A2 hit the headlines hard, we could be in for a treat here too.

I’ll tell you what it has this camera a dual 12 MP + 20 MP lens on the back that shoots 4K videos 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30fps (gyro-EIS), 720p@120fps. Yes that is correct, 4K videos.

Then there is that 20 MP selfie camera that can manage video recording 1080p@30fps.

I will blow the trumpets here, superb, impressive and at this price point, unbeatable camera performance. The only criticism is we would have really loved to see Image Stabilization for video recording. Everything other is on point here.

Performance and memory

Platform

Here this, and be advised it is not a complaint. If only that Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 (14 nm) Chipset was a greater one- I would have named this the smartphone of the year. It is still contending though and I sure will remember it when that time comes.  Running on Android 8.1 (Oreo) that is upgradable to Android 9.0 (Pie); Android One with an Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Kryo 260 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 260) CPU and an Adreno 512 GPU there really isn’t much more you would ask for.

Memory

There is no support for external memory expansion here. Xiaomi Mi A2 offers a 128 GB + 6 GB RAM or a 32/64 GB with 4 GB RAM. Have your choice.

Battery

That non removable 3000mAh battery will last up to a whole day of mixed usage. And yes there is support for fast battery charging as indicated on the features list.

Pros Cons
  • Solid build
  • Great design
  • Proper performance
  • Super cameras
  • 4K video recording
  • Good battery life
  • Good display
  • Loud sound and speakers
  • No 3.5mm jack
  • No SD card support

What are you waiting for? This is one hell of a smartphone, and for the price you get it for I would recommend you buy yours today, and hurry- such don’t stay on the displays long. Order for a Black, Gold, Blue, Red or Rose Gold Xiaomi Mi A2 at Phone Place Kenya.
