Sony is dumping their old naming system and adopting a simpler on as we see on this device, the Sony Xperia 1. And as the name suggests this will be the first smartphone to adopt this system. I have very high thoughts concerning the Xperia 1, emphases to be made mostly on the its display and camera(s) since these two are its strongholds. Below is a list of its key features. Sony Xperia 1 is a flagship device, no wonder the long list of high end features no wonder the RRP.

Design and build

This is a typical Xperia smartphone, definitely it is and how you know that is from how easily you can tell by its looks that it is a Sony mobile. But here is what, there is a little twist to the script here. The Xperia 1 for example is a tall smartphone of 167mm height and 72mm width. Some have described it as a chocolate bar design and rightly so. On its back is a triple camera setup with Sony branding in the middle and Xperia at the bottom.  The front has its 6.2 inches display with bezels on the top and bottom which Sony report to have maintained for improved connectivity. It would have looked unusual with a notch anyway so to your gain, you get a phone with great connectivity.

There is a dual speaker and a type C port on the bottom, what we do not see anywhere on this phone is a 3.5mm jack. Another thing worth mentioning is that the Xperia 1 has certification for water and dust resistance thanks to Sony for taking full advantage of its Corning Gorilla glass 6 build on the back and front of the Xperia 1.

That power button on the side is below its fingerprint scanner. Side Sense may also be a feature you might find yourself using for one handed usage mode. It is activated by tapping the side of the Xperia 1.

Display and camera

And I am glad I have to discuss these two under the same subtitle.

Display

Sony brags the world’s first experience of 4K OLED display on a smartphone. “Experience a cinematic aspect ratio with the new Xperia 1’s 21:9 CinemaWide 6.5” 4K HDR OLED display. A collaboration with CineAlta professional imaging engineers means it can reproduce colours as directors intended,” SONY. All this on its 6.2-inch panel that has corning gorilla glass 6 protection as earlier mentioned to ensure durability of a pioneer smartphone display technology. I am not sure I should go ahead and talk about its 1644 x 3840 pixels (~643 ppi density) since the numbers already speak loudly enough for themselves. This is not you’re your ordinary smartphone display, Sony Xperia 1 has some next level touchscreen panel, one never seen on any smartphone before it.

Camera

There is also something going on with the cameras of the Xperia 1. By the way, Sony never take any chances with their camera performance. I mean the company may (I repeat may) release a mediocre smartphone with a seriously out of this world camera performance. Its almost as if the camera performance on their smartphones is what keeps them in business.

Here we get a professional touch to your photo sessions with various modes within the camera application to ensure its exceptional triple lens camera systems combine effort to give the best of images possible. I’m talking about pro-level image processing even at 2X optical zoom. Video recording is 4K of course and is powered by Cinema Pro CineAlta 21:9 movie recording. And guess which lens has Electrical image stabilization, the selfie camera. I doubt it can get any better than this.

Performance and memory

Platform

Sony Xperia 1, and for lack of a better word is a powerhouse. Try imagine all the processing power its Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) chipset, Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 485) CPU and Adreno 640 GPU would achieve. Tremendous! And with Android 9.0 (Pie) the experience can only get better and better.

Memory

What can it store? Either 64/128 GB of content worth and as it runs on 6GB of RAM. And should the internal storage limit you, a microSD is always recommended and can be used to expand it to up to 512 GB. This is only available on the dual SIM model only so implore your wisdom as you buy.

Sound

Enjoy amazing Dolby Atmos audio though your Sony Xperia 1.

Battery

I would have wished for a slightly larger battery capacity even though its non-removable Li-Ion 3330 mAh battery still gets you home. And to reduce the charging time there is fast battery charging 18W (USB Power Delivery 2.0) capability on deck.

Now this is a one of a kind device. Sony Xperia 1 boasts a great display, great build and design, great camera performance and most importantly a great user experience. Have no hesitation whatsoever buying the Xperia 1, it is a phone most would confidently recommend.
